When Fiona met Adam
WELLINGTON
I'm from the UK and had tried internet dating on and off over many years, with little success. Hitting 30 was the start of a terrible year - I bought my first flat, but soon after was made redundant and struggled to pay the mortgage and then split from my boyfriend of 6 years after discovering he was cheating. I'd always thought it would be great to do some travelling, but suddenly realised a week before turning 31 that it was now or never to go and get a working holiday visa, and I picked New Zealand the same day, on a whim really. I quit my job and sold my flat, said some tearful goodbyes and was off for 8 months travelling.
I arrived in Wellington in November 2010 with the intention of living here for 5 months. I knew absolutely nobody and thought that internet dating might be a good way to meet people. I certainly didn't imagine I'd meet someone as amazing as Adam! We started emailing while I was still in Sydney and he was working for a few weeks in the US. We met about 3 weeks later and he was my third date here.
Our first date was amazing, the best I'd ever had, and they just kept getting better from there on. After two weeks Adam asked me if I would do him the honour of becoming his girlfriend :) Over the last two and a half years we've had some difficulties to overcome; mainly my homesickness, which was initially horrendous. My mother was diagnosed with cancer last year and it's been terribly hard to deal with that from so far away; but Adam has continued to be an absolute rock. He is without question the kindest, most thoughtful, caring, good and loving man I have ever met. Not to mention his intelligence, his wonderful sense of humour and amazing creativity and ambition.
Last week, on holiday in Rarotonga, Adam got down on one knee in front of a gorgeous sunset, and asked me to marry him. He has made me the happiest girl in the world! We already have a date set for January 2014 and my parents have booked their flights to come and attend our wedding.
I would like to thank your site for making all my dreams come true :)
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

What was your first date?
Adam invited me out to the Library bar in central Wellington. After a couple of drinks we went next door and had dinner at Chow (he insisted on paying!). Then he announced he had tickets for the Weta Christmas ball! That was an amazing party, plus I got to meet his good friends and his flatmate. We stopped off for a yummy cocktail at the Hawthorne Lounge on the way home (he walked me to my door) where we said goodbye and he was a total gentleman and didn't even try to kiss me!
